Drivers passing their category B car driving test on or after 1st January 1997 will not have the category D1 on their licence. Therefore to drive a minibus weighing over 3.5 tonnes drivers must take and pass the DVSA tests for this type of vehicle.
The D1 minibus licence is a vocational licence and therefore the standard required to pass will require the driver to demonstrate ability and knowledge above that required for the ordinary car test. The training will normally consist of 3 days training (6 hours a day) with two practical tests, part 3a off road reverse exercise test at the end of day 2 and part 3b prcatical on road driving test at the end of day 3. Training will cover all aspects of the practical tests including vehicle and passenger safety and checks, manoeuvre exercise, driving ability. Successful candidates will automatically be issued with their first HMT minibus permit lasting 5 years
